Time is money

A payment that is "successful" but sits for days is still a loan the merchant did not agree to. Certainty is the product.

A card payment on a terminal at a counter.
Paid is not the same as usable.

Friday afternoon in Abidjan. A customer pays. The dashboard says successful. The money is not in the till tonight. Cash would have been.

That is the real comparison. Not another method on the checkout. Not a longer feature list. Whether the merchant can use the money.

Paid is not the same as usable

Most payment products sell a status. Paid. Confirmed. Settled. Those words get used as if they mean the same thing. They do not.

A status is a screen. Usable money is working capital. If you cannot pay a supplier, restock, or send a payout until Tuesday, the rail charged you a short loan you never asked for.

Cash does not do that. The note is in the drawer. You know. The customer knows. The books match because there is nothing to reconcile later.

Certainty is the SME product

Small merchants in UEMOA do not wake up wanting a new payment method. They want the Friday sale to fund Saturday stock. They want to tell a customer it went through without checking three apps. They want the receipt and the bank line to agree.

That is why we treat confirmation as a product, not a nice-to-have. When a rail confirms, the merchant should see it. The buyer should see it. The books should match. If we cannot say that honestly, we should not pretend the payment is done.

Instant confirmation is not a magic switch

I will be precise. We confirm when the rail confirms. We do not operate a national instant switch. We do not invent a ten-second settlement story for a network we do not run.

Other markets built public rails that settle merchants in seconds. That is a useful lesson about working capital. It is not a claim we can put on lomi.africa until we operate that rail. We will not.

What we can do is refuse to hide the wait. If a method is fast, say it is fast. If it is not, do not dress the delay as processing. Merchants already know the difference. Their suppliers do too.

What we optimize

We stay the overlay. Surface, routing, reconciliation, identity. The merchant's customer graph. The receipt that matches the charge.

We do not become the switch. We do not ask an SME to wait for a new national protocol before they can take a payment this week.

If the money is not usable, it is not a payment. It is a promise. Cash already beat promises.
