Cash is still the till

Digital payments do not lose to other apps. They lose to cash, on price, certainty, and trust.

A 10 000 F CFA banknote.
Cash still wins the till.

We keep adding features to digital payments. Another method. Another dashboard. Another seamless step. Cash does not have a roadmap. It still wins the till.

In informal retail across UEMOA, that is not a cultural curiosity. It is the default. The customer pays with what they already trust. The merchant keeps what they can count tonight.

Three things cash already won

Price. A note has no fee the merchant has to explain. Digital always has a cost: a percentage, a wait, a failed attempt, a float. If the buyer or the seller feels taxed for the privilege of not using cash, they go back to cash.

Certainty. You have the money or you do not. There is no pending, no we will settle, no screenshot that might be real. Digital that cannot match that feeling stays a special case: invoices, distant buyers, tickets, a link sent on WhatsApp.

Trust. People have done this a thousand times. They know the paper. They know the change. A hosted page they have never seen, from a name they barely know, is a first-time relationship. You do not win that with more fields.

Features are not the fight

The industry keeps treating cash as a gap in the product. Add a code at the till. Add a wallet. Add a super-app. The merchant already has a till. The buyer already has a way to pay.

Digital wins when it is cheaper in friction, not richer in features. A payment the customer already knows how to finish. A confirmation the merchant can trust without calling anyone. A fee that is obvious before the tap.

That is UEMOA informal retail. It is not a travelogue about another country's switch. The mechanism transfers: cash is the competitor. The institutions do not.

What we will not do

We will not invent a lomi. code at the till and call it modern. We will not ask a shop to become a consumer destination. We will not pretend a live rail is an adopted rail.

If digital costs more, waits longer, or feels less sure than cash, the till already voted.
